| From the flag of Nicole Amelsvoort (Flagger since 2003) |
I first met Luke in the West Indies in 2003. I, along with a couple of friends had followed our dream to watch Australia play in the Caribbean and had travelled independently to paradise.
Having met Luke within the first couple of days of our arrival in Trinidad, my friends and I had experienced quite a few unfortunate ‘Caribbean Mishaps’ and were amazed at the wealth of information, knowledge and extended friendship Luke had offered us. This generosity had put no question in my mind that I would be joining the ‘Flag’ on my next cricket adventure!
Since then, I have ‘Flagged’ to India in 2004 and to Bangladesh in 2005 with intentions to Flag to Pakistan and back to the West Indies in 2008, and beyond.
As a solo female traveller, my first Flag experience was far from intimidating with a large percentage of the group female, many also travelling solo. I found that many of the people on tour had flagged before, and those first timers like myself had been welcomed into this ever expanding family!
Each time I have Flagged, I have always been amazed of Luke’s knowledge and understanding of the area, people and their customs. He in himself, is a walking, talking ‘Lonely Planet’ book with a particular eye for detail, especially when it comes to The Flags accommodation.
I have always been extremely happy with Luke’s choices of hotels, especially in places like Nagpur & Chittagong where there isn’t too many choices to choose from! He tends to seek out well priced accommodation that is never to far from the ground or the action that may be after celebrating a victory!
Luke’s stong passion for the game and his pride in the Australian flag has an amazing effect of fellow ‘Flaggers’, many like myself treating our Australian Flag as if it was our fist born! I believe that Waving The Flag offers an affordable, flexible experience to all people, of all ages, with one thing in common – The love of cricket!
