| From the flag of Gavin Robertson Australian Test Cricketer |
It was many years ago when I was picked for Australia to tour Pakistan that I first met a guy waving a flag down at the end of the ground on our first tour match. I said to my long standing mate of 20 years, Stephen Waugh, "Hey mate , who's the bloke waving the Aussie flag in the grandstand?", he said, "Thats Lukey Sparrow, he's always on tour with us!" And honestly, a few days later, it was obvious that Lukey not only knew all of the blokes but he was a part of the team.
In 1998, the Pakistan tour was, one word, "tough". After winning in Rawalpindi, we were under pressure to keep our eventual 1-0 winning score, but Lukey found the energy each day (in 45 degree heat) to constantly tell us to keep going, or well done, or another good day tomorrow boys.
So I put Lukey Sparrow into the category of special. Special because he believes in the baggy green and that flag. The waving of that flag was a costant for me as a cricketer on tour and I always regarded him as a member of the squad. Why? because like all good team members, he is always there and he has been a part of the success for Aussie teams overseas for the past decade because he embraces the culture, and is very much part of the brokering of cultural relations that allows Aussies to be seen in a special light and for that I thank him.
If you asked me to describe Lukey it would be simply this; 'Lukey Sparrow, Waving The Flag, Australia'.
